At first glance, a prop shaft and its operation seem simple. A prop shaft is just a device made to transmit torque from the gearbox to the wheels, right? So, what is the purpose of a prop shaft? To transmit torque from the transmission to the final drive – the wheels. Seems simple enough. But think of what we’re dealing with. This is an object moving in many ways. We have suspension for a start, so the drive shaft must be able to reliably work through varying angles. Put into this mix a lot of vibration too as we’re in a moving car. Now, picture a spinning cylinder of steel (or aluminium alloy maybe) which is transmitting torque from the gearbox to the wheels. While it vibrates a lot of torque is lost and if it doesn’t move you either have no suspension or you have a broken prop shaft.
“Simple! Just make some movable connections.” The idea again is simple, but the more parts you put into the process, the more opportunities you have to lose torque and increase maintenance.
